Often when male actors dress up in drag, it's downright hilarious, but when actresses go dude-ly for a role, it's usually for a gutsy performance. Glenn Close was spotted in Dublin dressed as a 19th century cross-dresser for her upcoming dream movie 'Albert Nobbs,' New York Daily News reports. In light of this and some other great performances of male characters played by female actresses, like Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan in 'I'm Not There,' we slipped into our wild imaginations to conjure up the best actresses we think would make great dudes in movies. The selections aren't based on manly physical features, but rather on the body of work and style each actress boasts.
Natalie Portman
Former Queen Amadala is the favorite to win Best Actress this year for 'Black Swan,' but it's not her ballerina character that makes us believe she can play a tough guy, it's her rapping chops. Her genius hip-hop video on 'SNL' was hilarious and showed a completely different side of the sweet-looking Natalie Portman. Top that with her vicious eyes and good looks in short hair, she could play a scary drug-dealing boxer -- we mean that in the best possible way.
Kristen Stewart
No one ever mistook K-Stew for being your typical feminine priss, but she played a mean and stingy Joan Jett in 'The Runaways.' We also learned she can throw a punch, therefore she could easily play a greaser character, but he'd still have to be pretty angsty.
Helena Bonham Carter
When you're an actress married to Tim Burton, you're probably gonna take on some pretty kooky roles. Helena Bonham Carter is a highly underrated actress with impressive range who can play the Duchess of York in 'The King's Speech' but also play a hypochondriac chain-smoking Marla Singer in 'Fight Club.' She can pull off anything, but the character would have to be at least a little deranged.
Marion Cotillard
Yes, she's French and beautiful, but before passing judgment, one can't deny she always carries herself with edge and mystique. She also has a history of wearing heavy makeup with 'La Vie En Rose,' so she won't be held by her delicate look. Academy Award winning Cotillard in drag would be more graceful and muted like a male version of Gelsomina in 'La Strada.'
Winona Ryder
Most consider Winona Ryder the secret gem in Oscar favorite 'Black Swan,' reminding people that she's still a tour de force in the right role. She's in the same vein as Kristen Stewart, just older (and with a criminal record!). Also, she's been accustomed to wearing short hair and playing darker characters, and played well alongside a gritty performance by Angelina Jolie in 'Girl, Interrupted.' If that movie were about guys, no one would notice the difference.
